Well, this was, um...

...Not what she'd expected. When they were told they were going in to "rescue endangered wildlife" and "help with conservation efforts", she'd been expecting to find Dratini, or Goomy, or something of that sort. Instead, Mitsuru was met with a veritable flood of Grimer, packed so densely into the defunct garbage compactor that she couldn't even see the floor. Were these really the Pokemon they'd been sent to protect?

No, no, she shouldn't judge a book by its cover. For all she knew, these Grimer could be perfectly nice! Sure, they weren't easy on the eyes, and okay, they constantly made gross squelching sounds, and yeah, they smelled unbelievably rancid, but... Uh... Well... They were... Uh...

"...Oh, bother..."

Desiree had certainly expected.. different kinds of pokemon to be needing protection, and all the more, different habitats to be maintained. Though she had seen similar clumping of squelching materials before, especially in the forest, the sight in the garbage compactor almost led her to gag.[break][break]

“A bother indeed,” she grimaced, “.. I’m.. not quite sure what they want us to do about this. Other than making sure they don’t sink.”[break][break]

She didn’t know a thing about the ranger she had accompanied, but she hoped, or rather, manifested, that she would have an idea that sounded better than sitting around and waiting for the ship to sink.[break][break]

“Should we.. try to move them somewhere else? Or the garbage compactor,” she asked with an ironic chuckle, unsure of what to do next, “.. unless you have a better idea.”

"Um... Maybe...?"

As if having to herd Grimer wasn't bad enough, she also had to do it with pop sensation Desiree Blooms. Seriously! Mitsuru's daughter had been obsessed with her way back when, to the point where it drove her half-mad. She had to admit, the looming shadow of celebrity certainly added to the pressure. What if she screwed this up? Would she end up in the tabloids? Oh, double bother...!

"Okay, let me try something here." Mitsuru said, pulling a Pokeball from her belt and releasing her beloved Trubbish. "Trubby! Could you please be a dear and ask those Grimer to move?"

"Trubbish!"

And so, the lovely little trashbag sauntered forth, wading through the bin juice of the trash compactor and waddling up to the largest of the Grimers with that sweet, kindly, slightly smelly look on his face.

"Trub! Trubbish, trub trub, trub trub trub, trub trub. Trubbish?"

And, after considering his offer for a moment, the Grimer responded.

"Grime!"

And then, the purple puddle proceeded to Pound his fellow refuse right in the face.

"Hey!"

The stench and the grotesque squelching was rather unbefitting to someone of her beauty and grace- and she could say the same for the one who had come with her, even if she had brought a trash bag of her own. But it seemed the Grimer were just as unwilling to budge as her nostrils on their unpleasant odour.[break][break]

“Oh god,” she sighed, her lips coming to a bite, “.. why couldn’t that have worked. What to do.. oh god..”[break][break]

Though the thought brought her back to her time falling into the purple mulch pit of the penitentiary, at least that one smelled vaguely of berries and mochi. Shaking her head and grabbing a few empty, tattered garbage bags from the room, she grimaced once more.[break][break]

“We need to..” she gagged, “.. Fill up.. these with trash. It can be like.. trash sanctuaries.. trash shelters..”[break][break]

Oh god. Trying her hardest not to spit chunks absolutely everywhere, Desiree stuck her hands into residual piles of trash and began filling. Why couldn’t they just listen to that moving garbage bag? Was it.. too fresh?[break][break]

This trash was not fresh at all.[break][break]

As the Trubbish came back to her, dejected and sniffling and with eyes full of bin juice tears, Mitsuru looked back to the gang of Grimer with disdain in her eyes. What a bunch of jerks! How dare they act like that! To one of their fellow Poison types, no less! Part of her just wanted to leave them here to their squalor, but alas, that wasn't the job she volunteered for.

So, as Trubby hid behind her legs and quietly whined to himself, she begrudgingly joined Desiree in "cleaning up". Picking up a garbage bag, she began to scoop up months-old dirt and years-old rot. What a dump. No wonder they were so irritable when they lived like this--

"Grime! GRIME! GRIME GRIME GRIME!"

All of a sudden, a blob of Sludge was thrown by one of the unruly creatures, and hit her directly in the face.

"EEP!"

As if the scooping and retaining of trash wasn’t bad enough, she gasped in shock at the collective’s flinging of sludge— it was quite rude, and frankly, unacceptable behaviour. Though, helping such baneful creatures like this.. it had to be expected, right? Did they even have brains, or was it all sludge?[break][break]

“That was so disrespectful of them… I’m sorry,” she sputtered, shoveling as much of the trash as she could muster into a third bag, “.. it’ll.. be okay. Just.. sludge.”[break][break]

This was more than vile, but it sparked a rather manic instinct from inside to simply say fuck it all. Fuck all the rules, the composure.. they were covered in goo and trash. They looked far past crazy now.[break][break]

“YUMMY YUMMY TRASH!! GET IN THE BAGS, THERE IS SO MUCH DELICIOUS TRASH!!”[break][break]

A few slugged over to the bags and got inside, but not enough— not quickly enough. Sprinting over to the clump of Grimer and grabbing a conglomeration of four, feeling toxins seep into her pores, she held them with a brute force. All the way to a larger bag, at least.[break][break]

There were pills for this kind of thing, right?

Yeah... Yeah! Screw these little jerks! Why did they have to be all nice and respectful, while they acted like real pieces of work and got away with it? If these pieces of filth were playing dirty, then it was only fair that they got to play dirty, too!

And so, grabbing a whole roll of trash bags, she proceeded to Grimernap as many of them as possible, until before long, both Mitsuru and Desiree had caught every one. The whole place was clean! Well, as clean as a trash compactor could possibly be. There was still plenty of old cardboard boxes, and empty tin cans, and the thick layer of muk on the floor, and rotting food, and generalised gunk, and--

"MUUUUUUUUUUUUK!"

Uh oh.

As the mass of sludge pulled itself off the floor and congealed together, Mitsuru yelped in terror. It turned out, gigantic blobs of pollution? Didn't like it when their smaller blob children were stolen from them. Which shouldn't have been surprising, but as it prepared to launch a massive Sludge Wave towards them, Mitsuru felt nothing but surprise.

"EEP! Desiree, do something!"

It was as if her mind was deteriorating rapidly- manic, uncontrollable energies based off of sheer idiocracy and irony alone. Though the group of adult slimes(?) were all the more pissed at them for rounding up their young(?), it was all their fault for refusing to cooperate! It wasn’t as if they were sent in to snatch their kids away, it was to protect them![break][break]

“YOUR FUCKING BUDDIES HERE..! THEY LOVE THE TRASHBAGS! GIRL. BABY GIRL,” she said to the muck collective brazenly, thrashing about the full bags in her hands, “.. DON’T FUCK WITH ME! ROSE.. ROSE SAPPHIRE.”[break][break]

Her Ampharos looked over from the sidelines that it had taken, cocking its head before having an oh-shit moment. It had been spending its time polishing an old apple, making it appear clean.[break][break]

But commands were commands- using a ZAP CANNON infused into the apple, it chucked it at the amalgamation with intent not to kill, but to knock out. And the glob hated it- dispersing, splitting just enough to fill up even more bags.

The apple landed amidst the slime, and with an ear-ripping crackle, the electricity was released all at once. The sheer paralysing power of the Zap Cannon spread throughout the wretched mass, yellow arcs of electricity dancing from the ceiling to the floor. Eventually, once the last of the charge had been spent, all of the Muk seemed to sag downwards, and the room was mercifully quiet.

Well, except for all the Grimer who were trapped in the trash bags, who were constantly repeating their names over and over, presumably crying and screaming and begging for their parents to rescue them from--

Hang on... Are we the baddies?

"...Miss Blooms, I don't want to be here anymore. I think I'm going to go home now."

With that, Mitsuru scooped her Trubbish into her arms and began the long walk (and boat trip) of shame back to dry land. Lovely, lovely dry land, where she could take a warm shower and not have to deal with the crushing moral ambiguity anymore. And so she could wash this sludge off her face.

She really, really hoped this sludge would wash off her face.
